self-led bushcraft

Girlguiding Gloucestershire only.  Our bushcraft activity can be self-led where the lead adult has experience in this kind of activity and also holds a first aid qualification. Self-led sessions are limited to 12 participants.

Equipment available

The group will have access to:

• One of our bushcraft areas
• 13 flint and steels (12 for participants, 1 for leader)
• Chopped wood
• Kindling
• 13 fire lighting wood platters
• Wood for shelter building
• 13 pairs of gloves for cordage (12 for participants, 1 for leader)
• Metal water bucket (fire bucket)

Self-led sessions do not include use of the whittling knives. Whittling is a separate instructor led session only.

​Groups will need to provide their own food items for their session, and provide their own first aid kit.

Potential activities

There are a number of activities a group may wish to include in their self-led bushcraft session. These may include:

• Marshmallow toasting/making s'mores
• Making damper bread
• ​Backwoods cooking (links with Guide badge)
• Trying three different types of fire structure (links with skills builder)
• Shelter building​​
• Nettle cordage
